Meeting time: Wednesdays 6PM-8:40 PM, Room 122Welcome to LIBS100. My name is Denise Coblish and I will be your instructor this term. In Information Literacy, you will first learn the basics of using a computer- the tool that we will be using mostly for class. Next we will gain familiarity with the school’s network and email login and use, followed by some basics of Microsoft Word. The course then moves into an intensive study of Internet searching. It is here where we will learn the basic searching skills that will prove to be the cornerstone of your academic study and research. We will hone our research skills and learn to evaluate the sources we locate. Plagiarism and the proper citing of sources is covered in depth, ensuring that all students abide by academic integrity. We will discover and master the rich database resources that the school has procured for the students. Finally we will pull all of these newly built skills and put them to the test by applying them to an actual research project. The final project will reflect the accumulation of each lesson covered throughout the course.I bring sixteen years of experience as a librarian to this course, as well as management experience that I developed as creator and owner of my own training business.
I am currently the Director of the Round Lake Library in Round Lake, NY. I also serve as an Instructional technologist at SUNY’s Empire State College, however there my students are actually the faculty members. I assist them in learning the software tools to use in implementing their online courses.
My teaching philosophy is student-centered with multiple approaches. You should expect to see our topics covered in a variety of ways: through group work, presentations, readings, and projects. You will demonstrate your understanding of the lessons both verbally and in writing. You will also have the opportunity to work both as a team member as well as individually.I look forward to working with you in the course! Mastering Information Literacy will have an immediate and positive effect on every other course that you take in college.Students are expected to communicate using the Bryant & Stratton email system and many assignments and projects will be submitted via email.
Your grade in this course will be based upon the following:
10 quizzes 10 points (1 point each)
10 Graded in-class activities 10 points (1 point each)
Homework assignments and projects will be posted on the class web site (dclibs100.blogspot.com). It is your responsibility to be prepared to participate in any follow-up activities, discussions, etc… pertaining to these assignments. The class is not a correspondence class and in-person attendance is required.
The critical workplace skills specifically addressed in this course are:
Taking Responsibility—you will be expected to develop the skill necessary to be responsible for completing tasks.

Lifelong Learning—information literacy is an import component of lifelong learning and you will begin to develop the skills and attitudes that will make you a lifelong learner.

The Final Project will make a good portfolio piece. A full description of the project will be handed out at a future date.
While it is recognized that there may be extenuating circumstances, late work will be penalized according to the following schedule:
Projects 1 letter grade decrease for each week late.
